Cute village boy in Kerala who asked us for food, money, pens... you name it!

The view from our guest house at Cherai Beach, Kerala.

On a rare trip ashore to stretch our legs during our houseboat trip.

An example of the Chinese-style fishing nets used in Kerala. The entire contraption is lowered into the water and left for a while before being hauled back to the surface again.

Cherai Beach jetty.

Our 1-bedroom houseboat on the Kerala backwaters.

Eating our first amazing meal aboard the houseboat. Lots of fresh chopped coconut, curry leaves, coriander and mustard seeds, tomatoes, curries, pappadums... It was as if we were being fattened up for slaughter!

Traditional Keralan breakfast of pounded rice cake stuffed with chopped coconut and mild spices.

Amazing sunset over the backwaters.

Boats are one of the most common forms of transport in Kerala. These men were shipping bags of rice. Keralan rice grains are quite large and puffy.

Dragonfly... taken with my new macro lens!

Keralan farmer at the end of the day.

School kids in Kerala on their way home. "Pens? Rupees? Sweets?"

The sweet smile spoils the gangsta image.

Super-friendly locals who drove past us as we walked through a waterside village.

"Y-M-C-A!"
This guy was the friendliest of them all – started blowing us kisses as we motored away in our boat. Very odd.

One of the crew members of a neighbouring boat, who managed to catch about six small fish like this using a rudimentary stick, crumpled piece of fishing wire and a paste of flour and water as bait. Unbelievable.

Our two boat crew members. Subash (left), the captain; John, the chef.

Mumbai by night.
The view from our hotel on Marine Drive, overlooking the Arabian Sea.

In Mumbai shopping at the Thieves Market with Colin.

We bought a plate of watermelon slices, and I noticed how this man spent the entire time waving a fly swatter to shoo away the flies from the fruit.
"What, so he has to stand there all day and do that?" I ask, incredulous.
"No," Colin says. "Just while we're standing in front of him, to make us feel better."
"Oh."

Me in front of this amazing mosque. Alas, no headscarf and exposed legs, so I couldn't go in.

A couple on their wedding day parading the streets of Mumbai with a full brass band and an entourage of foreigners in their wedding party.
"I'm rich, and I LOVE it!" they seemed to say.

Our final meal at a Chinese restaurant in Mumbai before Colin returned to Lucknow.
